Merrill G. Kirchhoff

Merrill G. Kirchhoff, 88, of Sumner, died Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 21, 2013, at the Hillcrest Home Chapel in Sumner, Iowa with Rev. Kali Hayslett officiating.  Interment will follow at Wilson Grove Cemetery, rural Sumner. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, December 20th, at Becker-Milnes Funeral home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the chapel on Saturday. 

Merrill George, son of Henry and Lorena Boehm Kirchhoff, was born June 5, 1925, in Fayette County near Sumner, Iowa. He was baptized at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Sumner and graduated from Sumner High School in 1944. On February 14, 1945, he was united in marriage with Evelyn Waschkat at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. Merrill worked for a time at McDonalds Farms, and from 1965 to 1992 worked for the Bremer County Highway Department from which he retired. Merrill and Evelyn enjoyed traveling, especially train trips to various locations. At one time, Merrill enjoyed fishing, and even recently enjoyed lawn mowing.

Merrill is survived by one daughter, Judy Kirchhoff of Sumner; and a brother, Clarence (Marga) Kirchhoff of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, who died April 7, 1997; his parents; four brothers, Frank, Hollis, Robert, and Elmer; and one sister, Lucinda Nuss.
